Volunteer Opportunities in Senior Living

Apr 22, 2026 | Senior Living

There is something deeply human about the desire to volunteer. To contribute. To feel needed. And volunteering can provide valuable experiences for both the residents and the volunteer. This week is Volunteer Appreciation Week and, on the blog, we will be talking about volunteer opportunities at Sunset Senior Communities.

SAIDO Learning

SAIDO Learning is a nonpharmacological program for those with memory affecting diseases and, through regular participation, has been shown to increase energy, renew social engagement, and build confidence.

The SAIDO Learning method involves a volunteer (called a Supporter), trained to work with two adults (called Learners) engaging them in a series of math, reading, and writing exercises. The goal is not to teach, but to engage the Learner in repeated successful exercises, at least five times per week.

Throughout our communities, we currently have 40 residents enrolled in our SAIDO Learning program. Multiply that by five sessions per individual per week, you get a grand total of 200 SAIDO sessions each week. While many staff members are trained SAIDO Supporters, we have a good number of volunteer Supporters as well and are always looking to add to that number. This volunteer opportunity at Sunset does require a day of training, but afterwards you can jump right into SAIDO sessions. And as you regularly lead these SAIDO sessions, you’ll realize that YOU get just as much out of the experience as the Learners do! Here is a quote from two of our current SAIDO volunteers:

“I did not expect SAIDO to be this rewarding when I signed up to volunteer! It’s been so fun to build relationships with the Learners, while also seeing the positive impact SAIDO is having on them Not once have I left a volunteer session and felt anything less than fulfilled and energized.” Garrett Neros, SAIDO Volunteer

“My dad started SAIDO and enjoyed it so much that I trained to be a SAIDO supporter. Three years later, I still support even though my dad has passed. I enjoy hearing about the learners’ lives – where they lived, who they loved, what brough them joy. It is great to see the learners’ eyes light up with a memory they want to share. I support, but I also learn. SAIDO is a special part of my week!” Tamara Baker, SAIDO Volunteer

Resident Companion

Becoming a resident companion is another great volunteer opportunity at Sunset. Resident Companion volunteers provide meaningful one-on-one connection for our residents through friendly visits, conversation, and shared activities. This role focuses on building relationships – whether that’s chatting, playing games, going for walks, attending events together, or simply offering a listening ear. Companions help reduce the feelings of loneliness and bring joy and comfort to residents in their daily lives. A warm, patient presence and a willingness to engage are the most important qualities for this rewarding volunteer opportunity.

Meals at Home

Our Meals at Home program is another great opportunity to volunteer at Sunset. Meals at Home is a service that delivers chef-prepared meals to seniors out in the community. We deliver hot meals 365 days per year and all meals are delivered by local volunteers. Meals at Home would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers who have a heart for serving the West Michigan community. Here is a quote from one of our Meals at Home volunteers:

“I enjoy volunteering with Meals at Home! I have worship music on while I’m driving, and everyone I deliver to is always so grateful. I’ve even had the opportunity to get to know a few of them and always look forward to connecting. And the treat Sunset provides for the volunteers is a nice bonus!” Rachel Green, Meals at Home Volunteer
