Active Senior Living | Making the Most of Summertime

Jul 30, 2026 | Life At Sunset, Senior Living

Summer has a way of making everything feel a little brighter – the days are longer, the air carries the warmth of the sun, and there is a natural pull - especially for us Michiganders - to get outside. And around Sunset Senior Communities, these dog days of summer are some of the most memorable and rewarding days of the year! In this blog, we will talk about what active senior living looks like in the summertime.

Explore the Outdoors

Gardening & Other Outdoor Hobbies

Gardening can provide a rich sensory experience for all ages and is a great way to get outdoors during the summertime. Your hands in the soil, the beautiful blooms, the feeling of accomplishment tending to something you’ve grown - research even shows that gardening can boost self-esteem and encourage positive attitudes for older adults. And with some simple modifications, gardening encourages purposeful movement and provides low-impact exercise for a wide range of ability levels.

There is something calming about a stroll through nature, especially on a (not too) warm summer afternoon! A gentle walk along a peaceful pond can do wonders for both the body and mind. But as a reminder, summer can be hot and while walking offers many health benefits, we recommend choosing shaded routes or walking during the cooler parts of the day. And make sure to stay hydrated whenever you’re outdoors in the summertime.

Outings & Local Happenings

Summer in West Michigan is packed with local events – from farmer’s markets and boat rides to zoo trips and ice cream outings, summer is the perfect time to be a tourist in your own town! Organized group outings give our residents the opportunity to explore and create lasting memories without the stress of planning.

Outdoor Games & Gatherings

There is nothing quite like an afternoon spent outside on the patio with a cold drink and good company! Even a simple outdoor gathering is a great way to encourage residents to connect with their neighbors. And as we know, staying socially active and engaged as you age is important for both emotional and physical wellbeing.

And on those hot days, an outdoor water activity is the perfect way to cool down and socialize.

Staying Active Inside

When temperatures surge or there is rain in the forecast, indoor spaces offer just as much opportunity for a fulfilling day.

Pool volleyball is one of our favorite indoor activities, regardless of the time of year. At Sunset, we take the competition the next level and have our campuses compete against each other. Whether you’re playing or just cheering on your team from the sidelines.
